Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday and discussed the development of railway infrastructure in state.
During the meeting, the chief minister requested the Centre to bear the full cost of developing Dehradun and Haridwar railway stations as model railway stations , along with the expansion/strengthening of both stations and the doubling of the Haridwar–Dehradun railway line.
The Union minister said that the proposal for the Centre to bear the full cost of the Haridwar–Dehradun railway line doubling project would be examined and an appropriate decision would be taken.
Dhami also requested the Vaishnaw to explore the possibility of including the Almora and Someshwar regions in the alignment of the Tanakpur–Bageshwar rail project and to make provisions for a road alongside the tunnel. The railway minister said that this proposal would be considered.
Dhami also requested that the old Rishikesh railway station be permanently closed and that all rights to its land be transferred to the state government. He added that if additional land is needed at Yog Nagari railway station for better operations due to the closure of the old station, the state government would positively consider and cooperate on this matter. The railway minister gave his in-principle approval
Vaishnaw also agreed, on the Dhami's request, to increase the frequency of the Dehradun–Tanakpur weekly train to three times a week.
