Cuttack violence: How clashes sparked chaos, curfew after Durga immersion; city tense as police flood streets

Send Push
BHUBANESWAR: Cuttack city wore a deserted look on Monday, with most areas continuing under curfew since Sunday evening.

Officials reported no fresh incidents of violence in the past 12 hours, but police remain on high alert to ensure peace and order.

The unrest was sparked on the evening of October 3 during a Durga Puja immersion procession when a group objected to loud music, triggering clashes that left several injured, including Cuttack DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo.

Stones and bottles were allegedly thrown from rooftops during the violence, which continued on Sunday.

In response, a 36-hour curfew was imposed across several police station limits from Sunday evening. Internet services, including social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and X, remain suspended to curb the spread of inflammatory messages.

Additional commissioner of police Narasingha Bhol said authorities are closely monitoring the situation. “Any further decision would depend on how events unfold," he said.

Essential services such as grocery stores, hospitals, and pharmacies continue to operate during the curfew, but police have urged citizens to avoid venturing out unnecessarily.

Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called a bandh on Monday, holding the district and police administration responsible for the unrest during the immersion procession.

Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan appealed to the public to maintain peace, assuring that “stringent action would be taken against those found guilty.” Police confirmed that the main culprits were identified, with several arrests made and a manhunt underway for others involved.

To enforce the curfew and maintain law and order, sixty police platoons and eight paramilitary companies have been deployed across the city. Authorities have also intensified vehicle checks at various entry points into Cuttack to prevent any escalation.

In a fresh advisory, Odisha Police asked people to verify the authenticity of any news before posting it on social media. “Refrain from sharing false or provocative content. Strict legal action will be taken against those found spreading misinformation or misleading content," it said.

Police said some individuals are creating and circulating fake news to disturb public peace. Citizens are urged to stay alert and not believe any misleading videos or social media posts under any circumstances, it said.
