Ed Balls and Ranvir Singh were forced to intervene as two guests repeatedly clashed on Good Morning Britain. The presenters were joined by journalist Will Lloyd, who argued it was time to abolish the monarchy, and royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, who maintained that the royal family is invaluable to Britain and should remain.
Lloyd said: "The House of Windsor is totally clapped out. The next three monarchs, including this one, are confused men and don't understand the world we live in. I think, if they had any sense, after this scandal, they would simply abdicate and let us turn this very grim moment for our country into something fun, imaginative and interesting." But things turned especially tense when Prince Andrew was mentioned as Lloyd raged: "The fact that Andrew, since 2010, when we started to learn about his connections with Epstein, has been allowed to hold quite important government jobs, has been allowed to live in a gigantic mansion.
"He should be packed out in a shed to the Outer Hebrides. Instead, at all times, he's been supported by this family."
Fitzwilliams hit back: "This is getting outrageous because surely this is a debate about the monarchy, not just one entitled imbecile, being Andrew obviously."
The 76-year-old explained the royal family are no stranger to scandals, citing the controversial divorce of Charles and Diana in the 1990s.
But as the royal commentator attempted to argue his point, Lloyd interjected: "What is alleged about Andrew is so much worse than a divorce. So much worse. It's insulting to compare the two."
The pair continued speaking over each other as Fitzwilliams snapped back: "No. I am getting my opening statement in which you did! This is my case if you'd please let me continue!"
Fitzwilliams added: "This is a matter of soft power," but before he could finish, LLoyd asked: "What is soft power? Can you define it? Can you define what soft power is?"
He fumed: "There are headlines all over the world about a prince, like Andrew, alleged to have done the things he's done, associated with us, and the previous Head of State, apparently covered this up. What is the soft power benefit of that?"
Neither guest could get a word in as they continued interrupting each other. Eventually, Ed and Ranvir were forced to step in to end the heated debate.
"Will... Will and Richard," Ranvir quipped as she attempted to halt the conversation. Ed chimed in: "We could talk about this for the next hour and I'd really enjoy that. But thank you both for coming on."
