Fried eggs are a staple inclusion on breakfast tables up and down the UK. Whether they're eaten on toast or as part of a traditional British fry up, fried eggs make for a perfect start to any day.
However, they can be tricky to get exactly right. Most people like their fried eggs to be rich in flavour, with the firm and slightly crispy edges contrasting the creamy and runny yolk. For those slightly unsure how to cook them perfectly, famous cook and television presenter Delia Smith has a quick and easy method to replicate.
The Delia Online website recommends a simple one-minute method to get "perfectly fried eggs". It will "provide a fried egg with a slightly crispy, frilly edge; the white will be set and the yolk soft and runny".
The method starts with placing a frying pan over a medium heat. Delia then advises adding "½ tablespoon of fat left from frying bacon (or groundnut, grapeseed or olive oil) in it."
Once the pan is hot, carefully break in the egg and turn the heat down to low. While the egg is cooking, tilt the pan and baste the agges with the hot fats so the top can be slightly cooked.
The recipe then says: "After about 1 minute, the egg will be ready, so remove the pan from the heat and then lift it out with a slotted kitchen slice.
"Let it rest on some kitchen paper for a couple of seconds before putting it on a warmed plate and eat as soon as possible."
It adds: "If you prefer not to have the crispy edge, use a medium to low heat from the beginning and, if you like your egg more cooked, give it a little longer. Always a spanking fresh as you possibly can."
If you would rather fry eggs in butter, Delia recommends user a gentler heat. This allows you to cook the eggs for a bit longer and makes sure the butter "doesn't brown too much".
