With colder months bringing damp air and condensation, dehumidifiers are becoming a must-have for keeping moisture out of the home. They can even help cut heating bills, making it quicker to air-dry laundry indoors.
Amazon is currently sellingthe Devola 20L/day low-energy dehumidifier for £135, with a significant 29% saving on the full price of £189.99. Designed to efficiently tackle moisture while running quietly in the background, the Devola dehumidifier can extract up to 20 litres of water per day and is suitable for bedrooms, hallways, bathrooms, or even cellars.
Not only does the Devola dehumidifier reduce moisture in the home, but it also cleans the air thanks to a HEPA filter. Devola says it traps up to 99.5% of harmful particles, including dust and allergens. It also features a laundry mode to help dry clothes, and a 12-hour timer can be enabled for automatic operation.
A 4L water tank is built into the Devola dehumidifier to hold extracted moisture. The appliance automatically switches off once it's full, so it can be emptied, but users can also attach the included continuous drainage hose for uninterrupted use. The 12L/day and 25L/day versions are also available at Amazon, although the 29% discount is on the 20L/day model only.
The Devola dehumidifier uses 210 watts of power, so it costs around 6p per hour to run at the current Ofgem price cap of 26.35p/kWh. It operates as quietly as 36-40dB, the brand says, which is about the same loudness as an average library.
Another option is the Logik 20L/day dehumidifieravailable from Currys for £169. It has a slightly smaller 3.8-litre tank, but the brand says it's suitable for rooms up to 70 square metres. For a budget choice, Lakeland sells a1L compact dehumidifier for £34.99. With a 400ml water tank, it's small enough to sit on a table or shelf and can extract one litre a day from the air.
Many Amazon shoppers are happy with their Devola dehumidifier, however. One reviewer said: "The laundry mode is brilliant as it blows out dry air, which I point towards my airer, and it doesn't cost anywhere near as much as a tumble dryer or having the heating on for longer.
"If I run it on high for the day, I'd say it's adding 80p - £1 on, but I can lower my heating in that room, so it's not much overall. It's made an enormous difference in our fairly chilly flat, I'd definitely recommend it for the damp, expensive winter ahead." Another pleased customer was shocked, writing: "I honestly cannot believe the amount of moisture this is collecting. I am amazed (and slightly alarmed) as I am having to empty the water compartment every two to three days, which shows just how much moisture was in the house/room beforehand.
"It's massively helping with clothes drying (old flat with rubbish storage heaters). Easy and simple to use and empty. Worth every single penny and would not hesitate to buy another one!"
A third simply added: "I don't know how I managed without this fab machine. It dries heavy loads of washing overnight at such a low cost. Less than 5p an hour for each load, and my electricity is 24.2p per kWh. The house is drier and warmer. Very quiet to run and a fab price."
However, some customers disagreed about the noise level created by the Devola dehumidifier, saying: "Dries washing quickly. Great for what I need it for. Wouldn't say it was quiet. Couldn't have it on whilst in the same room. Maybe quiet compared to other brands, but constant fan noise."
Another was unable to source a replacement for the HEPA filter. They wrote: "Unit very effective, but if you want a replacement air filter, you're out of luck."
