World Stroke Day, October 29: Every four minutes, one person dies from a stroke worldwide. A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is disrupted, causing brain cells to die. This is a very serious problem that everyone should be aware of.
World Stroke Day is celebrated every year on October 29, with the primary purpose of raising awareness about the serious risks and symptoms of a stroke. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, but doctors believe that recognizing the early signs within the first 60 minutes of a stroke can save lives and minimize long-term damage.
There's a simple rule to remember for stroke symptoms: "FAST," which should never be overlooked. These symptoms appear suddenly and rapidly. Unfortunately, due to high blood pressure, diabetes, and uncontrolled lifestyles, this problem is no longer limited to the elderly; cases are also rapidly increasing among young people aged 30 to 40, making immediate awareness and prompt action crucial.
F (Face - Facial Sagging)
The first visible sign of a stroke is facial drooping. If one side of the face suddenly feels weak or droops, it's a warning sign. Ask the patient to smile. If the smile appears half-hearted or uneven, or if saliva starts flowing from the corner of the mouth, immediately understand that this could be a sign of a stroke. Be alert as soon as these symptoms appear.
A (Arm - Arm Weakness)
The second sign involves your hands. If a person's hands or arms suddenly become numb or weak, this could be another major danger. Ask them to raise both hands simultaneously. If an arm falls down on its own or is extremely difficult to lift, it indicates that blood flow to the brain has stopped. Immediately consult a doctor if this occurs.
S (Speech - Difficulty Speaking)
This is the most important sign and should never be ignored. If a person suddenly begins to slur their speech, slur their speech, or understands everything but is unable to speak, this is a clear indication of serious brain damage. Don't mistake this symptom for sleepiness or anxiety; in such a case, seek immediate medical attention.
T (Time - Immediate Help)
If you notice any of the three signs mentioned above (face, arm, speech), don't waste a moment. 'T' means call an ambulance immediately. The first few minutes after a stroke are known as the 'golden hour'. The faster treatment is received during this time, the greater the patient's chances of survival and the lower chance of permanent disability.
